About FBST

History

The Fort Belvoir Swim club and the Fort Belvoir "Sharks" Swim Team were founded in 1975 when a group of parents of summer league swimmers banded together to provide year-round training and competition for their youth. Prior to its inception as a private, nonprofit organization, the team was a Post-sponsored summer league team coached by a Ft. Belvoir employee. After its reorganization, the team was first coached by a volunteer and subsequently by professionals, paid by FBST.

Organization

The Fort Belvoir Swim Team is a parent-run organization, headed by a volunteer board of directors which provides operational support to FBST. Through the dedicated efforts of all its volunteer members, and with the cooperation of Fort Belvoir, the team provides a competitive program open to both military and civilian families. FBST is supported solely on membership dues, donations, and fundraisers. FBST receives no funding from Fort Belvoir or any other federal entity.

Fort Belvoir Swim Team recognizes its roots are with Fort Belvoir and maintains a strong presence at Benyaurd Pool on Post. However, FBST’s commitment to serving has necessitated the growth to the surrounding communities. Therefore, FBST offers a best value program at Lee District, Mount Vernon, and George Washington Recreational Centers as well.
